Chances are you’re excited about everything to do with your big day—except for the pile of thank you cards you have to write afterward.

Fear not! Writing thank you notes doesn’t have to be daunting. Planning ahead does wonders for the process, and when you’re all finished, you’ll sleep soundly knowing both you and your guests look back fondly on your wedding day. Here are five surefire ways to make writing your wedding thank yous quick, easy and painless:

Plan Ahead

Part of writing a genuine, heartfelt thank you to your wedding guests is taking note of their gift. Acknowledging the specific item they gave you—from a $10 gift card up to 1,000-thread count silk sheets—will mean the world to them.

Before you open all of your cards and gifts, grab pen and paper to write down who gave you what. Then when you’re ready to write your thank yous, you can give them a shout out for their thoughtful present!  If you weren’t able to take a gift inventory, you can always thank your guests for taking the time to travel to your wedding or just mention how meaningful it was to have them there to witness an amazing moment in your life.

Divide and Conquer

There’s no reason to fly solo on this journey. You can cut your workload in half by making sure your spouse is holding up their end of the bargain. Split your guest list between the two of you, and suddenly, you’re looking at half the work! Order some food, crack open a bottle (or two) of wine and get cracking. With the power of two pens, you’ll be done in no time.

Make It Personal

When you begin dividing thank yous between your spouse and yourself, make sure that the assignments are as personal as possible. What do we mean? Well, you shouldn’t be writing a thank you to your spouse’s boss and, vice versa, he or she shouldn’t be the author behind the thank you headed to your aunt and uncle. This will help you include personal anecdotes or touches that make the thank yous come from the heart and mean that much more to its recipient.

Short Is Sweet

A wedding thank you needs to be more than one sentence, but no one’s expecting you to write a short novel. Capping your thank you note at 4-5 sentences will allow you to say hi, thank them for coming, acknowledge their gift and share that you’re looking forward to seeing them again soon. Save yourself some soreness, and live to write another thank you.

Don’t Delay

Procrastination is your worst enemy when it comes to writing thank yous. Not only will the undertaking seem that much more daunting, but not being prompt with a thank you will seem ungrateful. So steer clear of the headache, and try to knock your wedding thank yous out little by little. If you can get them sent out within the first few months after you tied the knot, you’ll be a hero. The rule of thumb gives a year to write all of your thank yous. The quicker the better!
